If you have children please seek their views.

The aims of operation are as follows:

To stop the killing of young people by weapons on the streets of London.

The Strategy is:

•To reduce the carrying of weapons by young people on the streets of Ealing.

•To gain the support of young people and communities of Ealing for police action to reduce youth violence.

•Operation Blunt will compliment our other activities to reduce all crime in Ealing.

•Taking knives off the streets will save lives

•Police and Londoners together can make London safer

•They need active support from community for police action

•The activities will make people safer and will save lives

2008 - Police are reminding people not to leave their homes with an open invitation to thieves - 2008.

Thousands of residents will be returning to work following the recent mid-term break and Ealing Borough Police would like to remind them that by taking a few simple precautions they can reduce their risk of becoming a victim of burglary.

A high percentage of burglary is committed by offenders who seize opportunities presenting themselves such as open windows; tools and ladders left out; open and insecure gates, or unattended houses in darkness.

A burglar will select his target because it offers him the best opportunity to carry out his crime undetected and with the fewest number of obstacles in his way.

A building that presents itself as unoccupied and insecure is far more likely to be targeted than one, which presents itself as occupied and secure.

We would appeal to all homeowners to also consider tighter security measures for your keys (including spare sets) and make sure you are properly lock your front door especially at night or when your home is unoccupied, following a number of high value letterbox burglaries on the borough recently.

Residents should also consider changing their habit of leaving keys in the hallway by having a pot for your keys inside a kitchen cupboard or even taking your keys into your bedroom at night to ensure you don't fall victim to a letterbox burglary.

Most burglars are not master criminals and are lazy.

They look for easy ways of getting into a house or garden without been seen. By taking a few simple precautions you can reduce the risk of being burgled and make your house and garden more secure and put off thieves.

What you can do to deter any burglar from attempting a break-in

•Remember to always close your windows and lock your home when you leave it empty - however briefly.

•Never leave a spare key concealed anywhere near the front door - burglars know all the hiding places

•Prevent letterbox burglaries by storing keys away from the front door.

•Do not label your house keys in case you lose them and they fall into the wrong hands

•Where possible, try to keep valuables out of sight from windows

•Install automatic switches, use timers which switch lamps or radios on and off, sound is also often a good deterrent.

•If you have gates around the outside of your house, 'LOCK THEM', it will reduce opportunist access.

•Keep the garden tidy as a building that presents itself as unoccupied is far more likely to be targeted.

•Never leave a garage or garden shed unlocked

•If you have ladders - ensure they are locked and not available to a thief. They will allow easy access to open upstairs windows.

•Put away all tools and equipment and ensure that all outside sheds and store cupboards are securely locked when not in use as they can be used to help them to force entry.

•Bring the tools inside if you do not have a garden shed or outbuilding.

•Install outside security lighting, which comes on automatically.

•If you have a burglar alarm, why not extend it to cover outbuildings and sheds?

•Photograph and property mark valuable property, garden plants or ornaments

•Register any valuable items for FREE on www.immobilise.com
